About Laser Marking & Engraving Technology

Laser marking and laser engraving systems are a fast and clean technology that is rapidly replacing older laser technologies. Direct part marking has now become a common process in many industries offering a non-contact, abrasion-resistant, permanent laser mark onto almost any type of material. High speed, high precision, micro laser marking and/or laser engraving of part information, readable alpha-numerics, bar codes or Data-Matrix™, serial numbers, corporate logos, etc. are possible on a wide range of component parts.

Fiber Laser Marking Basics

With fiber laser marking, focused light from a laser interacts with a material to produce a high quality, permanent mark on an object. A laser marking system is usually made up of a fiber laser engine, scan head assembly (commonly known as galvos), and control software. The software also provides the interface to manage multi axis motion systems if required.

Frequently, fiber laser marking systems not only mark,but offer laser engraving and laser machining capabilities, including thin material cutting, scribing and material removal.

The fiber laser machine is equipped with software that enables the laser marking of text, graphics, logos, bar codes and Data-Matrix codes. Automation features enable part serialization, date coding, variable text inputs, remote programming, input/output control and many other programming features.

Laser marking systems can make very precise, clean marks on both metals and plastics, at high speeds, making them suitable for most manufacturing processes. They can also be used for laser engraving, a similar process, but one that alters the part’s surface, leaving a mark that can be both seen and felt.

Laser marking is a non-contact process that uses no consumables, making it clean and energy-efficient. It is also an environmentally friendly process that uses no inks and chemicals like those used in other marking options, including inkjet or chemical etching. The laser marking or engraving process produces a highly flexible mark that can adapt to changing demands.

The laser marking process is very well-suited to the marking of both bar codes and two-dimensional bar codes on many of these materials. The code quality and resolution can be tuned for the space available and the quality of the reader. Specifically, the two dimensional codes offer excellent data density and minimize the space needed for the code.
